EU consultation on surrogacy, parenthood: Citizens can participate until February 13

Citizens of the European Union have until February 13 to submit input on the planned recognition of surrogacy and same-sex marriage in EU countries. Citizens can submit their feedback at: https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/12878-Cross-border-family-situations-recognition-of-parenthood_en.

Due to different legal situations within the countries of the EU, parenthood in one country is not necessarily recognized by another country. This includes, in particular, same-sex “marriages” and children born through surrogacy. The recognition of parenthood in these cases, introduced by the EU Commission, would undermine existing national bans on surrogacy or same-sex marriage in EU countries.

Corresponding criticism was voiced by the Federation of Catholic Family Associations of Europe (FAFCE): “The practice of surrogacy not only violates the fundamental rights and physical integrity of women who are used as surrogate mothers, but also of children who are victims of human trafficking. Such a practice is completely contrary to the best interests of the child, but becomes a cornerstone in the European Commission’s initiative.”

The recognition will come into force when the proposal has been unanimously accepted by all member countries.
